Train Travel Bucket List
Tick off these unique experiences by rail
It wouldn't be a Eurail bucket list without a section just for train travel, would it? The train journeys themselves - waiting at the platform, changing trains - are a massive part of your trip, and you'll soon experience some iconic Eurail moments. Tick off our bucket list when you've completed these train travel experiences!
Take a night train
When we spoke to you all about your favorite Eurailing experiences, the most common experience you shared with us was taking a night train. So, if you haven't already, with excitement and exhilaration tingling through your veins, hop aboard a night train...and wake up in a completely different country. What could be cooler than that? A night train is also an amazing way to make friends and stay up for hours, talking about your favorite destinations.
Have a tight connection between trains
Two minutes to get from Platform 1 to 17? Five minutes to get to the bus station on the other side of town?
Whether it's your planning or through no fault of your own, at some point in your trip there will be a mad dash through the station, and you'll find yourself shoving people out of the way. Don't worry, we've all been there.
Fall asleep on a train
There are two types of people in this world. Those who can sleep on trains, and those who think they can't. But we all succumb eventually.
You might be the type to take a travel pillow, ready to fit in a quick nap on the next leg of your journey. Or, on the other hand, the traveler who can't possibly sleep on the train because you don't want to miss your next stop. But then the train starts moving and your eyes start closing...
Enjoy the Glacier Express route in Switzerland
What could be better than a train journey offering scenic views of mountains, ice and snow? Traveling from Zermatt to St Moritz, the Glacier Express is famous for its breathtaking scenery of Swiss mountains, forests and lakes. Go one stop further with the train from Zermatt to Gornergrat to see the Matterhorn, Switzerland's crown jewel.
Connect with other travelers
No matter how many incredible things you see, some of your very best memories will come from the friends you make on your trip. Maybe they're other Eurailers, taking the same route as you. Or solo travelers, exploring the world one stop at a time. The friends you make on the train, in your accommodation and at your travel destination may well be friends for life. Are you ready to meet them?
Ride the Bernina Express
How do you get across the Alps? The only correct answer should be with the Bernina Express: a scenic train ride stretching from Switzerland down to Italy. Settle in your seat and get ready for the ride of your life, with stunning Alpine scenery passing by the panoramic cars. From the dizzying heights of Switzerland's mountains to the turquoise blue of Italy's waters, this is a ride you'll never forget.
Travel from Derry-Londonderry to Coleraine, Northern Ireland
Part of the beauty of the Derry-Londonderry to Coleraine line is that it's a regular commuter service, but just happens to be one of the most beautiful journeys ever. Passing by the wild beaches, ancient settlements and bird habitats of this rugged country, we know you'll soon agree.
Play cards with a group of strangers
What is the easiest way to bond with a group of strangers, anywhere on the globe? From our experience, it's playing a game of cards. Whether you've struck up a conversation with another Eurailer or want to talk to some of the locals, playing a game of cards is a great way to make new friends. And it's much easier to pack than Monopoly, of course.
Eat last night's leftovers for lunch
Trying to be strict with your budget? Make two portions of your evening meal to munch on the train the next day. This might be pasta, sandwiches or even a local treat you couldn't bear to leave behind. When you're on the train, there's nothing better than enjoying the fruits of your labor for the second time. But be a little mindful - you don't want to make the whole carriage smell!
