Hungary
If you've never visited Hungary, you need to. This central European country is a hotspot for culture, food and local life, and we're not just talking about Budapest. Head from low to high with this bucket list, checking out caves, castles and crazy views.
Watch the sunset at the Fisherman's Bastion, Budapest
This is, without a doubt, one of the best places to see the sunset in Europe. Climb across these iconic city fortifications for the perfect view of the Hungarian Parliament and the River Danube below, and make sure to snap a photo in one of the archways. If you're lucky, you might even hear some music during your visit!
Relax in the Széchenyi Baths, Budapest
Budapest is known as the 'City of Spas', and your stay isn't complete without an afternoon in the baths. With spring water reserves running beneath the city, it's the perfect location to soak away your worries. Visit the sunshine-yellow Széchenyi Baths to test the medicinal waters and enjoy the many pools, whirlpools and sunbeds dotted around.
Walk across the Chain Bridge, Budapest
As the first permanent bridge connecting Buda and Pest, it's no wonder the Chain Bridge has become such an iconic symbol. With its stone arches and sweeping chains, walk from one side of the city to the other. Make sure to return at night to see the bridge lit up and reflected in the Danube.
Eat goulash
You can't visit Hungary without trying goulash, the national dish. The iconic beef-based stew, seasoned with paprika, can be found all over the country. Try a traditional recipe, before heading to Budapest to sample some more contemporary styles.
Swim in Hévíz Lake
If you enjoyed your time in Budapest's baths, head out to Hévíz Lake for an even cooler experience. What appears to be a normal spa complex is actually built upon a thermal lake. Rest those joints among the lilypads, allowing the water to do its work.
Wonder at the Visegrád Citadel
Perched above the Danube Bend, Visegrád Citadel has one of the most unique locations in the world. Visit this historical fortress for sweeping panoramas of the Danube, sliding around the corner.
Stay at Lake Balaton
Haven't visited Lake Balaton before? Known as Hungary's Inner Sea, this is the largest lake in Central Europe and provides all kinds of summer fun. You can enjoy wine-tasting, fortress-hopping and water sports, then take your pick from the numerous towns and resorts dotted along the lake shore.
Learn about Hungarian history, Hollókő
Hollókő is a beautiful village in northeast Hungary with traditional houses and forest trails. Unlike other villages turned into open air museums, Hollókő really does live in the past, with its residents using age-old traditions and customs in their daily life. Visit to see the 13th-century castle and museums dedicated to the rich folk culture of this area.
Brave Baradla Cave
Combine your trip to Domica Cave in Slovenia with a visit to Baradla Cave on the Hungarian side of the border. With underground areas named the Concert Hall and the Giant's Hall, be prepared for some musical entertainment during your tour.
Follow the Flower Carnival, Debrecen
Debrecen is Hungary's second largest city after Budapest and has some interesting traditions. Visit in August to witness the Flower Carnival, an annual event where the city is covered in flowers. Go one stop further and head out to the Great Forest of Debrecen, a peaceful woodland just on the edge of town.
