Top 10 Eurail Destinations in 2019

Hand-picked by the Eurail.com team

It won’t surprise you that at Eurail we love to travel. In fact, we're lucky enough to call traveling our daily work. When we're not at the office making sure that you get the most out of your Eurail Pass, we're probably in a train ourselves, exploring all that Europe has to offer.

We asked our team which European destinations shouldn't be missed in 2019. We hope they'll inspire you for a brand new year of traveling!

Lisbon is the greatest city in Europe according to Robin and he may just be right. The city with its colored houses, cobbled alleyways, and historic trams is simply irresistible. All good things in life can be found in Portugal's capital. Enjoy the beautiful, melancholy fado music, eat as many of the famous pastéis de nata as you can, and take your pick of impressive castles, monasteries and museums. Lisbon is budget-friendly and has pleasant temperatures throughout the year.

Our colleague Cat Hai calls Graz “a hidden gem”. This city is indeed easily overlooked when traveling through Europe, even though it is Austria’s second largest city. When you're taking the train from Vienna to Ljubljana, consider including Graz in your itinerary: it will be worth it. With its remarkably well-preserved Old Town and four universities, the city is historically interesting but at the same time has a young, edgy feel to it. Make sure not to miss Springfestival in June: an electronic music festival with performances by world-leading dj’s.

Born and raised in Valencia, Mar is proud of her city. “It combines all the good characteristics of Spain: good weather, exceptional food, and beautiful city scenery.” As opposed to its ‘competitors' Barcelona and Madrid, Valencia is a relatively compact city, which makes it very accessible. Those interested in contemporary architecture will fall in love with the futuristic buildings in the famous City of Arts and Sciences complex. But Valencia has so much more to offer. Don’t miss out on Las Fallas in March: the city’s biggest fiesta, welcoming spring.

“Amazing city center, nice people, great food, great ambiance.” Thom loves the quaint, fairytale-like city of Bruges, and he’s not the only one. A place as beautiful as Bruges gets many visitors each year. If you’re looking for an authentic experience, avoid the crowds and consider staying for more than just one day. With its cobbled lanes, peaceful canals, and beautiful medieval buildings, this Belgian city is as picturesque as it gets.

Prague is considered to be one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. That's why Othilde and many other colleagues tipped it to be in this list. Aside from all the architectural highlights, beer is a great reason to visit Prague. The Czechs are known for producing the world’s best beer, so unsurprisingly Prague is beer heaven. Drinking is amazingly affordable here: a beer for only 1 euro is no exception. If you’re a beer lover, make sure not to miss the Czech Beer Fest in May.

Surrounded by Norway’s famous fjords, Bergen offers an exciting combination of natural wonders and urban culture. It's one of Georgios' favorite places on earth. Bryggen, the old wharf of Bergen, has a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and shouldn’t be missed. The city is home to great museums and concert venues. Take the cable car up to Mount Floyen for an amazing view of the city or discover the iconic fjords with one of the many cruise companies.

Daniel tips the French city of Avignon, located in the heart of the beautiful Provence region and surrounded by lavender fields and cypress trees. The city is easily reached by TGV train, so make sure not to miss it when you’re traveling through France. Avignong is famous for its beautiful broken bridge, but has more to offer. Lovers of dance and drama should not miss the annual Festival d’Avignon: one of the world’s great performing-arts festivals. If you’re planning on going, make sure to book your accommodation early.

Sicily may be an island, but Yeonjoo is here to tell you it can still be reached by train. The Italians invented a ferry that transports the train across the Straits of Messina before continuing on the rail tracks in Sicily — talk about impressive engineering! Once you’ve reached Sicily, you’re ready to explore the vibrant city of Palermo and the island's beautiful beaches and exquisite cuisine.

With a Eurail Pass valid in Italy you can travel across the Strait of Messina to Sicily. Nice.

What’s not to love about Berlin? It’s one of Europe’s most exciting cities with great historical sightseeing and an ever-thriving club scene. Exploring Berlin with a Eurail Pass is a piece of cake, says Wendy. “The city is super easy to reach by train and the S-bahn is included in your Pass.” Berlin is also great for foodies, especially for vegans: the city offers many great vegan restaurants (that carnivores will love too).

According to Silja, the Bernina Express is a train ride you have to experience at least once in your life: think of all the clichés about scenic train travel and multiply them by 1000. In 4 hours, the train takes you from Chur, Davos or St. Moritz in Switzerland to Tirano in Italy, passing through breathtaking mountain scenery. In the last part of the journey the train passes through Italian-speaking Val Poschiavo, a beautiful valley in the far south of Switzerland that is a joy to visit..
